MANILA, Philippines — Militant drivers have decided to defer filing a petition at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for another round of fare increase, saying the recent rollbacks have prompted them to reconsider.

In an interview Tuesday, Piston (Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide or United Organizations of Drivers and Operators Nationwide) secretary general George San Mateo said their demand for a P10 minimum fare for jeepneys in Metro Manila was pushed back because of the rounds of oil price rollbacks, the latest last Friday.

“We decided na huwag muna magsampa [not to file] for the meantime sa [at] LTFRB kasi may paghupa sa pagtaas ng [because there have been rollbacks in the] world market price at [and] local price,” he added.

But San Mateo said they would still monitor prices and would file a petition for the fare increase if needed.

“Pero tuloy parin ang balak naming magsampa…oras na sumirit muli pataas ang diesel, doon namin itataon ang pag-file [But we will still pursue our plan to file … the moment that diesel price increases, that’s when we are going to file],” he said.

San Mateo said the government should take a cue from these recent rollbacks and remove the Value Added Tax (VAT) on oil.

“Lalong lumalakas ang clamor ng taong-bayan para pag-alis ng VAT sa oil at kuryente [The people’s clamor for the removal of VAT on oil and power is getting stronger],” he said.

Current Metro Manila jeepney fares are pegged at P8.50 for the first four kilometers and P1.50 for the succeeding kilometers.
