Present

Posted by Abi Kwok on May 24, 2009

Through the years I’ve learned to be a “present” person. Thinking about the past made me regret a lot of things I did (leading to TONS of sleepless nights), and thinking about the future just, well, scares me. So I told myself that I would think of the NOW. Right here, where everything is still in my hands and in my control that I can make decisions without worrying too much of what will happen tomorrow or the next day, or the day after that.

Spontaneity? I guess so. But people can argue with me on that. I’ve never been much of a spontaneous person before, but I guess things change and PEOPLE change. I’ve learned to appreciate the “now” instead of the “yesterday” and the “tomorrow.” I guess, at the end of the day, this mindset keeps me sane. Because if I will spend each day planning and thinking ahead, I will definitely have a breakdown.

Breathe in. Breathe out.

I sometimes surprise myself at how I can keep such a cool head when I’m with other people. When I’m alone though, things are SO MUCH DIFFERENT.

====

On a different note, the media and social attention being given to what I would like to call the “Hayden sexcapades” is getting annoying. The man’s a jerk, he’s sick (and he admitted it, right?), and he definitely has to face criminal charges sooner or later. Let’s just leave the law and the people behind its wheel to their work. What I find annoying is that several media outfits are just banking on, cashing in on the controversy.

I would like to think that the issue would just wither and die if media would stop prying on the private lives of these innocent, albeit careless people.

Ultimately, it would boil down to news sense. Is the issue still worth media coverage? Yes it is news worthy, but is it still relevant? And don’t tell me that all these takes on social relevance make the issue relevant, because people are justย  getting it wrong.

Music, music, music!

Posted by Abi Kwok on May 16, 2009

A week’s worth of bumming led me to discover tons of music from different genres that I have now stacked in my iPod for my different listening moods. Ranging from indie, new wave, pop, and rock, these are just some of the artists I discovered (or got oriented to, whichever you prefer :-)) this week:

EDITOR’S NOTE: I’m still too lazy to put descriptions. But I will once I get back on track and I get out of this “forced” vacation and my brain starts working again :-/ in the meantime, I will put in some of the songs I loved from the artists ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Jason Reeves – “Never Find Again, “Reaching,” and “Pretty Eyes” are my favorites.
  • James Morrison – I loved his duet with Nelly Furtado in “Broken Strings” and I also loved the song “Once, When I Was Little”
  • Alphabeat – super, SUPER loved this group. Their songs make me smile, especially “10,000 Nights.” Do check out the video. Super cool ๐Ÿ˜€
  • Ingrid Michaelson – “The Way I Am” rocks!
  • Kate Voegele – I love Kate’s character in One Tree Hill. I also love her songs. In her new album, I love “Angel” and “Inside Out” (like the name of this blog, heh)
  • Matthew Ryan – super hard to find his songs. Ugh. I love “Return To Me”
  • Vampire Weekend – I had their album in 2007 but lost it when my iPod conked. So I downloaded their self-titled album again this week and I was reminded of how cool this band is. Very nice!

One last for the road

Posted by Abi Kwok on March 22, 2009

Thunder

Today is a winding road
It’s taken me to places that I didn’t want to go
Whoa (whoa, whoa, whoa)
Today in the blink of an eye
I’m holding on to something and I do not know why
I tried (I tried)

I tried to read between the lines
(I tried to look in your eyes)
I want a simple explanation
(For what I’m feeling inside)
I gotta find a way out
Maybe there’s a way out

You’re voice was the soundtrack of my summer
Do you know you’re unlike any other?
You’ll always be my thunder, and I said
Your eyes are the brightest of all the colors
I don’t wanna ever love another
You’ll always be my thunder
So bring on the rain
And bring on the thunder

Today is a winding road
Tell me where to start and tell me something I don’t know
Whoa (Whoa, whoa, whoa)
Today I’m on my own
I can’t move a muscle and I can’t pick up the phone
I don’t know (I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know)

And now I’m itching for the tall grass
And longing for the breeze
I need to step outside
Just to see if I can breathe
I gotta find a way out
Maybe there’s a way out

You’re voice was the soundtrack of my summer
Do you know you’re unlike any other?
You’ll always be my thunder, and I said
Your eyes are the brightest of all the colors
I don’t wanna ever love another
You’ll always be my thunder
So bring on the rain
And bring on the thunder

Yeah I’m walking on a tightrope
I’m wrapped up in vines
I think I’ll make it out
But you just gotta give me time
Strike me down with lightning
Let me feel you in my veins
I wanna let you know how much I feel your pain

Today is a winding road,
It’s taken me to places that I didn’t want to go
Whoa…

You’re voice was the soundtrack of my summer
Do you know you’re unlike any other?
You’ll always be my thunder, and I said
Your eyes are the brightest of all the colors
I don’t wanna ever love another
You’ll always be my thunder, and I said
You’re my sweet soundtrack of my summer
Do you know you’re unlike any other?
You’ll always be my thunder
So bring on the rain
Oh baby bring
On the pain
And listen to the thunder

On love, relationship, and cheese

Posted by Abi Kwok on September 19, 2008

Disclaimer: this is a me-talking-to-myself post. It may not make sense to you, but I’m trying to have a conversation with myself. So, don’t ask ๐Ÿ˜‰

***

When I think of love, I always try to look back at my Philosophy and Theology classes. Too bad I got the wrong professors and I missed out on some of the important lessons in life. But I’ve always looked at love as simple…it’s only us that make it complex.

Maybe I’ve seen too many sappy movies (and cried over them a lot, too), but I think love, more than just a feeling, is a form of appreciation. You appreciate his/her laugh (even if he/she laughs like a pig, you know, that snort snort sound), hazel eyes (or blue, green, what have you), even his/her feet. I think these are the things sorely lacking in relationships today.

Maybe if couples just learn to appreciate each other more, then things will at least be positive for the both of them.ย

I’ve often asked myself, “How do you know that your SO loves you still?” and I’ve always found myself staring at a blank wall. I can think, “Oh he loves me if he does this and that,” but maybe things are different for him. It’s hard trying to put yourself in the shoes of the other, maybe that’s why many relationships end in a bad note.ย

It’s really hard trying to demystify relationships, let alone your partner. That’s where trust comes in. But trust is easier said than done, right? No matter how much you tell yourself that you trust your partner, somehow distrust always comes in. It’s like it’s the devil inside you, telling you to think otherwise.

I’m blabbering. So I will end this post.

If you haven’t seen the movie Enchanted, then I highly suggest that you do. I particularly love this song, That’s How You Know, sung by Amy Adams. Sure, the song is sappy and melt-in-your-mouth cheesy, but the song really is simple and true: we all just want to be appreciated. Check it out:

Don’t look away

Posted by Abi Kwok on September 16, 2008

I’ve always looked at TV shows as reliable sources of great indie music. Undiscovered, raw, and underrated artists are often featured in shows like One Tree Hill, The OC, and other CW Shows (to give them credit). OTH Season 5 has focused the spotlight on two “raw” artists: The Honorary Title and Kate Voegele.

To say the least, both are given such huge exposures that a whole episode – and two or more episodes for Kate – was devoted to them. I’ve checked out YouTube and many people commented on how these two artists wouldn’t have been “discovered” (more like shoved into the glaring limelight) without the help of OTH.

But I’d like to focus this entry to Kate Voegele. Her website introduces Kate like this:

The musical landscape is teeming with singer/songwriters, many of them quite capable, but only a handful have something truly distinctive to offer. Kate Voegele belongs in the latter category. Don’t Look Away, Voegele’s first full-length album (MySpace Records), is a revelation…

My first thought upon hearing her, “Ok she sounds JUST LIKE Michelle Branch.” Her song has that distinct Country twang, she plays excellent guitar, and her voice is deep and soulful like Branch.

But I think what sets Kate from Michelle is her songs. Yes, they do have the same Country/Acoustic/Alternative Rock approach to it, but Kate’s songs are raw. They talk about love, live, and everything between.

My favorite song in the album is “Wish You Were.” The song is painful but the melody is happy (in a way). There’s something very honest in her words, like when she sings “It’s Only Life,” which is another favorite of mine.

People have commented that Kate’s music was nothing special. But I think she deserves a chance. If you haven’t heard/seen her, take a look at this YouTube video:

I was true as the sky is blue
I couldn’t soon say the same for you
So now I find denial in my eyes
I’m mesmerized by the picture that’s in my mind
