MANILA, Philippines–Police in the province of Ilocos Norte arrested on Sunday a suspect involved in the killing of a family of four in Vintar town last Friday, a police spokesperson said on Monday.

Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome identified the suspect as Eryll Mark Palafox, 30, whom a witness positively identified as one of those responsible for the killing of the Castro family, consisting of husband and wife Amador and Marciana and their daughters Mercy and Reymalin, on April 3.

Initial investigation revealed that Rodney Castro, son Amador Castro, saw several armed men enter the Castro residence at Barangay 14 at around 10 p.m.

Sensing danger, Rodney immediately fled but not before hearing gunshots from the direction of their house shortly afterwards.

On Sunday, local police were able to arrest Palafox in his residence at Barangay 2.

Investigators discovered bloodstains on Palafox’s clothes and witnesses positively identified the suspect during a police line-up, Bartolome said.

Ilocos Norte Police are conducting follow-up operations to arrest the remaining gunmen and are preparing required documents for the filing of the appropriate case in court against the arrested suspect, he added.

Bartolome also stressed the importance of witness cooperation in solving crimes.

“The cooperation of the witnesses as well as the remaining family members has been essential in the arrest of the suspect. This goes to show that the community and the police should continue to work hand-in-hand in curbing criminality and solving cases such as this incident,” he said.
