MANILA, Philippines–The Philippine National Police (PNP) has sent additional equipment, food and vehicles to Sulu as police and military troops reassumed their position in the province, where two Red Cross workers remain in the hands of the Abu Sayyaf.

In an interview Monday, PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa said they have dispatched 80 units of handheld radios, radio mobile repeaters, air transport vehicles, armoured-personnel carriers (APCs) and food supplies to police and civilian emergency force (CEF) detachments in the province since March.

Verzosa said food rations of troops have also increased.

Meanwhile, one battalion of Special Action Force (SAF) is on standby in Zamboanga City as a ready reserve force, Verzosa said.

One battalion is made up of 350 policemen.

Verzosa said he wanted to provide all policemen and CEF in eastern Mindanao with handheld radios and other equipment, including members of Philippines Marines to improve communication in critical areas.
