MANILA, Philippines–The 125,000-strong Philippine National Police (PNP) is all set for its security plan for the Holy Week, which includes securing all major travel routes and travel destinations nationwide.

PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa on Monday issued a directive to all PNP regional offices and national support units to implement respective security plans for the Holy Week and for the entire summer season.

PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome said Police Assistance Centers have been set up in major tourist destinations in Northern and Southern Luzon and in resort towns in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

Assistance desks would be put up in the entire stretch of Maharlika Highway from North to South Luzon, the Strong Republic Nautical Highway in the Visayas and Mindanao, and other major thoroughfares, the police said.

The PNP-Highway Patrol Group (HPG) would also lead road safety operations.

Assistance desks have also been set-up in all land, sea, and air transportation terminals to assist travellers.

Bartolome said that these Police Assistance Centers would serve as “quick-reaction points for police emergency and medical response, and advance command post for traffic management and security operations.”

All security personnel are expected to conduct mandatory security checks at airports, seaports, and bus terminals, Bartolome said.

In coastal resort areas, the PNP-Maritime Group has been tasked to conduct seaborne patrols particularly in resort areas and tourism zones.

In the urban centers, police units have also been alerted to conduct preventive patrols and neighbourhood watch to guard against criminals that would take advantage of homes left unattended by vacationing residents.

Bartolome also advised residents to make sure their homes are secure when leaving for the long vacation.

The National Capital Region police office (NCRPO) has earlier deployed 3,000 police across Metro Manila for the Holy Week.

“While the entire nation observes the Holy Week and people are enjoying their vacation, the PNP will be working to ensure safety and security along travel routes and travel destinations that will be visited by the people,” Verzosa said.

Police said travellers can contact the police through its hotline 117 or by sending a text message to 2920.
