ZAMBOANGA CITY – (UPDATE) Businessman Eliseo Jablo, who has been missing since January 8, was found by police in a village here Tuesday morning, authorities said.

“He is safe,” said Chief Superintendent Angelo Sunglao, Philippine National Police Western Mindanao director.

Senior Superintendent Mario Yanga, Zamboanga Police acting chief, said Jablo, a franchise holder of Julie’s Bakeshop in Barangay (village) San Roque here, was recovered at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday in Barangay Upper Calarian.

“He looks quite ill and frail and undergoing medical attention,” Yanga added.

In a separate interview with, Yanga said the businessman was undergoing stress debriefing.

No ransom was paid for Jablo’s release and kidnappers were members of a “local group,” Yanga said.

He added that police were able to arrest some “five or six” suspects during the rescue operation led by Zamboanga City police anti-kidnapping unit inside Southcom Village, Upper Calarian.

Two of the suspects were policemen.

“Mga scalawags ito [These are scalawags],” Yanga said.

He declined to give further information as police were pursuing other suspects.
