2008 in retrospect
Posted by Abi Kwok on January 2, 2009
So much has happened in the year that was and when I think back, I can’t help but feel surprised at how so much has happened in just 365 days =O I have so much to be thankful for (read: previous blog entry) and so much to look forward to. But before I do look forward, some key events and realizations in 2008:
— I realized I ended up in the profession that I vowed to absolutely avoid back in college: journalism. Why? Still no answer to that, I’m afraid.
— I still don’t know whether I chose the right career path. It’s days like this one, when it’s a holiday yet I ENJOY working, writing stories, and transcribing, when I feel like I made the right choice. But when work wakes me up at 2 a.m., when I get scolded and shouted at over petty things, these are the times when I feel like, ‘Hey I don’t deserve this.’ But hey, I’ve got to toughen up!:-)
— Family always knows best. In college, I was away from my family for too long that when I finally got to be with them under one roof, I was culture shocked. But this turned out to be a very positive thing as I realized that being away from my family for almost three years almost led me to a direction in my life that I would have regretted in the future. Families are lurve ^__^
— School rivalry doesn’t end in college. Believe me. Back then, I always thought that the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry was the biggest “fight” there was. Turned out, I was wrong. Who gives a shit about where you studied anyway? Apparently A LOT. I hate it. But I’m coping with it. It’s not the school, but the person, right? Good thing philo and theo classes made me look past these. π
— College friends are lurve π this year, I promise to reconnect with my high school friends. Para maiba naman, heh π
— My firsts for 2008: driving all the way to Tagaytay (note: I was the driver); watching a concert (two at that!); covering an actual crime scene; falling in love with my two best dogs;Β watching ADMU win the UAAP basketball championships; falling in love all over again; nail spa; went on a lot of “field trips” I’ve never enjoyed as a kid (read: repressed childhood).
— 2008 Mixed Tape (in random order): Apologies — Grace Potter and the Nocturnals; Whatever It Takes — Lifehouse; Never Find Again — Jason Reeves; Wish You Were — Kate Voegele; Can I Have This Dance — HSM3; Make It Mine — Jason Mraz; Mixtape — Butch Walker; Spinning — Jack’s Mannequin; Chase This Light — Jimmy Eat World; My Sundown — Jimmy Eat World; Halo — Bethany Joy Lenz; Superhuman — Christ Brown; Crush — David Archuleta; Alison — Elvis Costello; What a Catch, Donnie — Fall Out Boy
— My favorite movie (not necessarily released this year): You’ve Got Mail!
— Plans for 2009: go out of the country; go OUT OF TOWN (ferchrissake); be a better journalist :-); start my own business; build better relationships; update this blog more often!
— This will be a year of changes and challenges. I’m bracing myself. I’m steeling myself from everything. God, I hope everything works out π
