My thoughts on Dela Paz

Posted by Abi Kwok on October 27, 2008

I have to be honest. The whole controversy on the Moscow incident has got my head spinning, and NOT in a good way. The story broke less than two weeks ago and already I’m bombarded with a WHOLE lot of information that I can’t possibly process in one or two seatings.

I have to say, though, that high-ranking police officers really are rich. The disparity between the non-commissioned police officers (=PO1 to SPO4) and the generals (two-star up) are so huge that a newbie reporter like me is nothing but overwhelmed.

The sad truth is, these generals are richer than me. Huhu 😦 but that’s OK. I know that their job is way difficult than mine so no worries 😀

But I digress.

It has been a week since Eliseo dela Paz, former PNP comptroller, appeared before media to formally apologize for the incident that, he said, caused an “international embarrassment.” To tell you the truth, I really don’t understand why such a small contingent should bring a huge amount of money. Yes, the costs of living in Russia are high, and yes, contingencies such as medical emergencies do happen in such cases, but still.

I’ve always told (more like ranted. LOL) my fellow reporters that there would be no problem in the first place if Dela Paz just declared that amount. But the damage has been done, as the cliche goes.

I’m sharing some unpublished photos of Dela Paz during his first media appearance last Tuesday:

Anyway, I’m really glad that PNP chief Jesus Verzosa finally stepped up after his major boo-boo at the Senate hearing last Thursday. This time, I’m sure he made a good decision, albeit not enough, as Senator Mar Roxas said. Mistah or not, rules are rules, and the same applies to Dela Paz.

I know this incident will never end, even though Joc-Joc Bolante is set to arrive here tomorrow. I’m sad for Verzosa because this incident hit his administration less than a month when he assumed the role of PNP chief.

I’ve always told myself: I like to believe that there are still good policemen around 🙂

Changes

Posted by Abi Kwok on October 14, 2008

I was browsing through some old Multiply albums (=college albums) a while ago and I couldn’t help but feel a bit sentimental as I thought of how things were then. Everything was so simple, so carefree. Yes, we do worry about some big problem or two, but in the end, we all just slept through it. Most of all, we were YOUNG.

Now, though, everything seems so heavy. Each task we’re assigned to do comes with a heavy weight and screwing up is always not an option.

I remember writing in my last column for The GUIDON, now we can’t say “Sorry sir, I screwed up. Can I rewrite my paper again?”

I miss being young, being a student, and being carefree. I wish life is still as simple as they were back then.

😦

So while I’m being emo, I decided to put together a before and after photo, which I grabbed off Multiply. 😀

“Apologies”

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Yesterday he said my eyes
Were fading fast away
I said well what do you expect
You asked me not to stay and if it had all been for the best
I wouldn’t feel this way
And he said

Oh he said it’s crazy
How love stays with me
You know it hurts me
Cause I don’t wanna fight this war
It’s amazing to see me reading through this scene
Of love and fear and apologies

My love is like a blanket
That gets a little bit too warm sometimes
I wanna wrap somebody in it
Who can hold me in his arms
Cause when it got a little too hot in there
He was always stepping out for air and he froze
Oh he froze

He said it’s crazy
How love stays with me
You know it hurts me
Cause I don’t wanna fight this war
It’s amazing to see me reading through this scene
Of love and fear and apologies

Yesterday he looked at me
With a tear in his eye and said
I’ll always tell you you’re my friend
I hope i don’t have to lie
Cause it’s clear you love another man
I said you’re damn right

And he said
He said it’s crazy
How love stays with me
You know it hurts me
Cause I don’t wanna fight this war
It’s amazing to see me reading through this scene
Of love and fear and apologies
He said it’s crazy
How love stays with me
You know it hurts me
That i didn’t figure it out before
And now it’s too late for a soliloquy
It’s way too late for dignity
It’s time for apologies

😦

Check out my gun-shooting experience =)

Posted by Abi Kwok on October 10, 2008

I was able to experience first-hand how it was like to hold, load, and shoot a gun. I tried both a 9-millimeter and a rifle. I absolutely LOVED the experience. But before I, or anyone of us, becomes trigger-happy, check out my interview with PRO-GUN president Mike Melchor on how to be a responsible gun owner:

Finding Teehankee (late post)

Posted by Abi Kwok on October 9, 2008

It’s a given that, being a journalist, I have to being on my toes ALL the time. That’s why I was a little less surprised when, during a dull day at Crame, I was told by my editor to rush to the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City to stake out Claudio Teehankee Jr., the pardoned convicted murderer, reportedly living inside the NBP Compound for almost a week.
