MANILA, Philippines — The suspect who robbed then shot Ateneo graduate Tara Santelices, leaving her still comatose, in Cainta last month, was killed in a reported shootout with police in Antipolo, Rizal Monday morning, an official said.

Chief Superintendent Ricardo Padilla, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) regional police director, said Orlando del Rosario, 29, died when he tried to shoot it out with a surveillance team of the Antipolo police on MH del Pilar St., San Isidro village, around 11:30 a.m.

The team, led by Senior Inspector Noel Carias, reportedly spotted and confronted Del Rosario. When the suspect drew a.45 caliber pistol and shot at the policemen, they fired back, killing him on the spot, Padilla said.

Police recovered four sachets of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) from Del Rosario, Padilla said.

As of posting time, police are conducting follow-up operations to determine if Del Rosario had companions.

Santelices and her friend, Joyce Elaine Mejias, were robbed on August 6 while riding an Angono-bound jeepney on Imelda Avenue in Cainta, Rizal.

The robber shot Santelices in the head when she refused to hand over her laptop computer.

The bullet fragmented inside the head of Santelices, a 23 year-old member of the band Saffron Speedway.
