MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its intelligence operations to monitor possible attacks on key establishments across Metro Manila, ahead of the United States’ commemoration of the seventh year of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorism attacks that left thousands dead.

PNP director general Avelino Razon Jr. said on Wednesday that he instructed all police field units to initiate preventive measures against terrorist activities by any local group.

He added that he also implemented security measures in line with the PNP’s “3-Tiered Defense System against terrorism and heinous crimes.”

This defense system consists of the PNP “intensifying intelligence operations to monitor and preempt movement of known threat groups, strengthen the defenses of vital installations and soft targets, and ensure readiness to respond to emergencies and incidents,” he said.

In an earlier interview, National Capital Region Police Office chief Geary Barias said he instructed all police officials to monitor high-risk establishments, including cell-sites, malls, and transportation terminals.

Razon said he has also instructed police officials to increase check points across Metro Manila.

“Based on historical data, some terrorist organizations have been known to launch activities to commemorate some dates and occasions that are significant to their organization,” said Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome, PNP spokesman.

The PNP has remained on full alert status in Metro Manila because of the ongoing fighting in Mindanao.
