MANILA, Philippines — An eight-year old child was killed by the crossfire of a shootout between a policeman and the son of a former village chief in Manila’s Tondo district Tuesday morning, a police officer said.

Manila Police District Station 1 chief Superintendent Rolando Miranda said Jerwin Torralba was playing with a kite when he was hit in the nape as one of his men, Police Officer 2 Bernardino Cruz, traded shots with Archibald Bernardo, 28, son of former barangay (village) chairman Rene Bernardo at the former of Faustino and San Pedro Streets in Balut, Tondo around 9 a.m.

The child was declared dead on arrival at the Tondo General Hospital.

Miranda said their initial investigation indicated a family feud could have triggered the shootout. Cruz’s mother defeated Bernardo’s father during the last barangay elections.

Cruz and Bernardo, who were both riding motorcycles, ran into each other and started firing at each other. It was not clear who fired first.

Responding policemen disarmed Cruz, who did not resist, and brought him to Manila Police District headquarters.

Bernardo was wounded in the shoulder and arm and was brought to the Tondo General Hospital for treatment.
