MANILA, Philippines — Regional police in the province of Compostela Valley have deployed extra teams to secure evacuation centers in the area to guard against possible theft and other crimes among evacuees.

In a phone interview Tuesday, Senior Superintendent Ronald dela Rosa, provincial director of Compostela Valley Philippine National Police (PNP), said they have initially deployed one team to secure the four evacuation centers where residents are staying. On Tuesday morning, they have increased the teams to three.

But Dela Rosa added that there have been no reports of crimes as of posting time and the situation in the area was “okay, pero siksikan [but congested].”

Two landslides triggered by heavy rains buried more than 20 houses in a remote gold-mining village in Compostela Valley on Saturday, killing six villagers and injuring 17 others. Another landslide struck the village early Sunday, killing five more people.

As of Monday, the death toll rose to 14 as rescuers recovered more bodies under the mud and boulder.

Dela Rosa added that rescue teams have yet to find survivors.
