MANILA, Philippines — A civil society group expressed “distress” over the Supreme Court affirmation of Social Security System president Romulo Neri’s executive privilege against testifying on a conversation with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on the scandal-tainted national broadband network (NBN) deal.

In a statement, Black and White Movement convenor Vicenter Romano said the high court decision would also “negate the government’s constitutional mandate of transparency and accountability.”

“Its decision to remain deaf to the motion for reconsideration of the Senate perpetuates the perceived conspiracy of silence within the executive branch. Moreover, this stifles the people’s right to get the unadulterated truth,” he added.

The group stressed that Neri’s knowledge about the NBN scandal would not “subvert crucial military or diplomatic objectives,” a requirement for invoking executive privilege.
