MANILA, Philippines — A metrowide protest is set on Thursday, August 28, by multisectoral groups to demand for the immediate removal of the value added tax on oil and for the implementation of the P125 across the board wage increase, one of the participants said Monday.

Presto Suyat, spokesman of the Kilusang Mayo Uno, said the protest would be headed by different transport groups and would also be participated in by labor and agricultural organizations.

“The price of the crude in the world market has been reduced greatly but oil firms have responded with small rollbacks. The Arroyo government has also been playing deaf to reasonable call by workers and the country for a P125 legislated wage increase and the removal of VAT on oil products and power,” said Suyat in Filipino.

Suyat refused to give more details but that the groups would be expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday to formally announce the mass action.
