LTO still to probe alleged misuse of congressional plates

IMO: I absolutely agree with Nograles that LTO should crack down on abusive politicians who use the police to ease their way out of traffic. Politicians using “wang-wangs,” police escorts, and pushing motorists out of their road way should not be re-elected.

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has yet to begin investigating the incident early Sunday morning involving the alleged misuse of a congressional vehicle plate in which a security guard was killed and another seriously injured.

In a phone interview Wednesday, LTO investigation division head Roberto Valera said they have yet to receive any documents related to the incident, in which a speeding sports utility vehicle (SUV) sporting the congressional “8” plate allegedly rammed and killed Marbert Raz, 30, and injured Romy Rivera, around 2 a.m. Sunday near the Trinoma Mall in Quezon City.

In past interviews, LTO chief Alberto Suansing said he has already ordered the investigation division to summon the owner of the Nissan X-Trail with license plate ZAK-158, registered to a certain Sharon Faye Bautista, which allegedly also sported the congressional plate, reportedly issued to a Metro Manila lawmaker.

But Valera said he has yet to receive any notice from Suansing and his division has yet to summon the owner of the vehicle.

Valera declined to further comment on the incident, citing the lack of data available to his office.

“I still have to talk to [Suansing] and I don’t want to pre-empt anything,” he said.

Calls to Suansing, who is out of the country, were unanswered.

House Speaker Prospero Nograles released a statement on Tuesday ordering a full inventory of all congressional plates.

He also called Suansing “ignorant” for assuming that vehicles with congressional plates are exempt from traffic rules and regulations.

Nograles reiterated his call for the LTO to apply the law to all by also launching a crackdown against those who use the streets with convoys of armed and motorcycle-riding police escorts.

He said only the president, vice president, chief justice, Senate president, and House speaker are allowed by law to have police motorcycle escorts
