MANILA, Philippines — The Light Rail Transport Authority (LRTA) is extending operations of all lines to 11 p.m. starting Tuesday, August 19, the agency’s administrator, Melquiades Robles, said Monday.

Current operating hours for Line 1 are from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays to Sundays, while Line 2 trains RUN from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

At a press conference, Robles said the new closing time covers Line 1, from Monumento to Baclaran, and Line 2, from Santolan to Recto.

The overhead train system has experienced double-digit growth in passenger volume since the start of the year.

Observers say this is because commuters see fare and time savings from riding the overhead trains instead of other forms of land transport.

Robles said the later closing time is meant to “encourage” people to ride the trains because these are “cheaper, safer, and faster.”

“We hope it will be a habit to start using the rails at these times,” Robles said.

With the extended operations, Line 1 is projected to serve 20,000 more passengers, Line 2 will carry 3,000 more, Robles said.

Colonel Adelo Jandayan, chief of security for LRT trains, said they would increase security in both lines during the extended hours, deploying 40 more security personnel.

“Our people are always vigilant and alert,” he said.

Robles said government subsidizes around P67 of the real cost of an LRT ticket.

The actual fare on both lines would normally cost P81 bit commuters pay only an average of P14, he said.
