MANILA, Philippines — Civil society and activist groups will attempt to create a new world record for the largest voice choir on August 22 with “Truth Fest,” which seeks to expose the “untruths” in Philippine society and raise issues such as renewed calls for Charter change and the conflict in Mindanao.

At a press conference Wednesday, Sister Mary John Mananzan, OSB, of the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP), said they expect to gather around 50,000 people at Plaza Rajah Sulayman on Roxas Boulevard in Manila for the largest crowd in the world to search for the truth.

The people are expected to chant a “litany of untruths,” a rundown of all the alleged anomalies exposed over the past few years, including the “Hello Garci” scandal, involving purported wiretaps of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and a former election official allegedly discussing how to rig the 2004 elections in her favor, and the scandal-tainted national broadband network (NBN) deal, to which Arroyo and her husband Jose Miguel, have been implicated.

“It will be a venue for creative and innovative ways to encourage truth-telling and to search for truth,” Mananzan said.

She added that more “exposes” would be made during the event, which starts at 3 p.m. and ends at dawn of August 23.

The highlight of the program will be the “litany of truths” on 9 p.m.

Other issues they will raise include the allegedly destructive mining on Rapu-Rapu Island in the Bicol region and the value added tax.

National Artist for Literature Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera said artists will stage “an unprecedented performance activity in defiance of the rule of the untruth of society.”

“Nine days from now, Filipino artists will converge in one place in Manila…In our pursuit of truth, we learn to order our priorities and in the process learn to transform our lives,” he said.

Lumbera said artists are one with the other sectors and groups in pushing for social change.

“Because artists are also citizens, today we wish to announce a major undertaking of Filipino artists as citizens,” he said. “The artists are doing it hand in hand with all the sectors of our society.”

“Artists play a fundamental and continuing role in making our nation. We have time and again taken up the responsibility to use the arts in crystallizing issues and principles and reinforcing our people’s commitment towards a collective endeavor, especially during times of crisis,” he added.

Cris Millado of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) said the “Truth Fest” would be a “celebration and not a protest. The program will mainly be song presentations, cultural performances, and a creative expression of the whole community,” he said.

Street art, drum lines and performances will be staged during the entire event, Millado said.

Motorists are advised to take alternate routes during the Truth Fest as the stretch of Roxas Boulevard between Quirino and Pedro Gil will be closed.
